How this table is built
  • Figures are minimum project budgets companies publish on their own profiles — the floor below which they decline work, not the price of a finished project.
  • USD only. Companies quote in six currencies and averaging across them produces a number nobody charges.
  • Budgets outside $300–$2,000,000 and rates outside $5–$500/hr are dropped as data-entry errors.
  • A country needs 5 listed companies for a row, and 5 published rates before a median rate is shown.

This says who will engage, not what your scope should cost. A budget that reaches most of the market still buys very different things depending on what you are building.

Who is focused, and who has proved it

Horizontal: how concentrated a company is on AI development. Vertical: how much checkable evidence stands behind it. 59 of 1000 companies are plotted — the rest have fewer than 2 evidence signals, so placing them would be guesswork.

How a company is placed
  • Focus is the inverse of how many categories a company claims, blended with the share of its portfolio tagged with this one. A firm listing three technologies is concentrated; a firm listing forty also appears here.
  • Proven delivery adds published reviews (to 20), portfolio projects (to 25), Ahrefs Domain Rating (to 60) and years listed (to 10). Each is capped so no single signal carries a company to the top.
  • Positions are relative to the other companies on this page: the median company sits at the centre of each axis, so a quadrant boundary means "ahead of half the companies listed here". Raw scores are in each bubble's tooltip.
  • Deliberately excluded: the star rating, which sits in too narrow a band to separate anyone; the editorial rank, which is a hand-assigned sort weight; and paid verification, which does not move anything on this chart.
Leaders:
Concentrated on this work and with the record to show for it.
Specialists:
This is most of what they do, but the public evidence is still thin.
Established generalists:
A substantial track record, spread across many categories.
Emerging:
Building both focus and evidence.

Customer Reviews about AI development

Web Chemists

What AI development covers

AI development is the engineering around a model rather than the model itself. Most commercial work today starts from a foundation model — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama — and consists of retrieval, tooling, evaluation, guardrails and deployment. Training a model from scratch is rare outside research labs and a handful of well-funded product companies.

That changes what you should look for in a vendor. Data engineering, prompt and context design, evaluation harnesses, cost control and MLOps decide whether a system works in production. A team that can only demo a notebook will struggle at the point where latency, accuracy and unit economics start to matter.

What teams build most often

  • Retrieval-augmented assistants. Internal search and Q&A over a company's own documents, tickets and wikis, with citations back to the source.
  • Agentic workflows. Multi-step automations that call tools and APIs, with a human approval step on anything irreversible.
  • Document and data extraction. Turning invoices, contracts, forms and email into structured records that feed an ERP or CRM.
  • Predictive models. Demand forecasting, churn, credit scoring, predictive maintenance — classic ML, still the highest-ROI category in most industries.
  • Computer vision. Defect detection, counting, OCR, medical imaging support and video analytics.
  • Recommendation and ranking. Personalised feeds, search relevance, pricing and matching.

How to choose an AI development partner

  • Ask what they have shipped to production, not what they have prototyped. The gap between the two is where most AI budgets are lost.
  • Ask how they evaluate quality. A team without an evaluation set and a regression suite cannot tell you whether a change made the system better or worse.
  • Check data handling. Where does your data go, which model providers see it, is anything retained for training, and can the whole system run in your cloud tenancy or on-premise?
  • Get the running cost, not just the build cost. Inference, vector storage and observability are recurring, and a badly designed pipeline can cost more per month than it did to build.
  • Insist on a bounded first phase. A four-to-six-week discovery or pilot with a defined success metric is cheaper than discovering in month seven that the use case was never viable.

Budgets, timelines and team shape

A scoped pilot — one use case, one data source, a working interface — typically runs $15,000–$60,000 over six to twelve weeks. A production system with integrations, evaluation, monitoring and access control is usually $80,000–$400,000, and ongoing model and pipeline maintenance runs 15–25% of the build cost per year.

Hourly rates vary more by geography than by skill: roughly $120–$250 in the US and Western Europe, $40–$90 in Eastern Europe and Latin America, $25–$60 in South and Southeast Asia. A typical delivery team is one ML or AI engineer, one backend engineer, a data engineer part-time, and a product owner who understands the domain well enough to judge whether an answer is correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to build an AI product?
A pilot with one use case typically costs $15,000–$60,000. A production system with integrations, evaluation and monitoring usually falls between $80,000 and $400,000, plus 15–25% of the build cost per year for maintenance and model updates.
Should we fine-tune a model or use retrieval?
Start with retrieval. It is cheaper, updates instantly when your data changes, and gives you citations. Fine-tuning earns its keep for format and tone consistency, for narrow classification at high volume, and for cutting latency and cost once a use case is stable.
Do we need our own data science team?
Not to start. Most companies get their first two or three systems into production with an external team and one internal owner who knows the domain. Bringing capability in-house makes sense once AI is on the critical path of a revenue process.
How do we keep company data private?
Use enterprise API tiers that exclude your data from training, or self-host an open-weights model in your own cloud. Ask a prospective vendor for their data-flow diagram, sub-processor list, retention settings and whether they can deploy fully inside your tenancy.
How long does an AI project take?
Six to twelve weeks to a usable pilot; three to six months to something you would put in front of customers. Time goes into data access, evaluation and edge cases far more than into model work.
